Collateral Damage

Working with donated hand-dyed synthetic and human hair and constructed cardboard shoes, this installation challenges the viewer to give consideration to hair as symbolic of female identity, and the ways in which women’s bodies are exploited for commercial purposes, from marketing and advertising, to sex-work, to the beauty industry. The piece pays homage in particular to Hindu women who sacrifice their most precious possession, their hair, to the Gods, only to have it sold to international suppliers for resale. Presented at Blackfish Gallery.
